Queens resident Shirajul Khan was declared dead by the Broklyn’s Kings County hospital. In response, the 70-year old sued the hospital and the city for the torment he went through.

A 70-year-old New York man, Shirajul Khan, was informed on April 21, 2020, that he was dead by the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. While he was never a hospital patient, Khan was confused with a man bearing the same name.

The only difference was, the latter had left behind a hefty bill amounting to $90,000 for his COVID-19 related treatments. As a result, khan filed a lawsuit against the hospital and the city for mixing up two different people and the immense trouble it caused him.

According to the man who was a victim of identity-mixing, he was forced to pay all his medical expenses from his own pocket as he was left without any insurance backing him up. He further wrote:

“This has caused me great pain and suffering. The strain that this has put on me and my family has provoked the relationship with my wife to deteriorate”

Furthermore, he even stopped receiving his social security payments after being declared dead. Medicare further advised him to communicate with the Hospital, but Khan was left around being kicked from department to department in May 2020.

The old couple denied any discourse of details with the Daily News based on their lawyer’s advice. However, the petrified Khan expressed his fear and distress regarding the state’s lack of social security and insurance for eight long months:

“It has been exceedingly difficult for me and my family to deal with and resolve, especially since it all happened during the first months when the global pandemic caused by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) was starting to take over New York City,”

Khan was left with heavy medical bills to pay because of insurance failure. With no federal stimulus checks, the grieved elderly man fell behind $40,000 on his mortgage, which severely strained his relationships and caused the family extreme anxiety.

Khan is reportedly suing the hospital and the city for approximately $400,000 for all the harassment and torture he went through during this nightmare. However, the agitated man wrote in the court paper that he was clearly not dead.

[T]he gunshot victim was, in fact, alive.

The East Flatbush hospital’s spokesperson refused to comment on the unfortunate event of chaos and the trouble it caused to the identity-mix-up victim and his family, who was not even a patient there.

A similar incident occurred about 7 years ago wherein 6 metro firefighters in Nashville were put on administrative leave after falsely declaring a man dead during an emergency call. The “presumably” dead 30-year-old man who shot himself in his head was found to be breathing. Observing his pulses, the police called an ambulance, and the gunshot victim was, in fact, alive!

In another news, Gorelal Kori, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, was rushed into and was put on a ventilator after the patient complained of difficulty in breathing. The 58-year old man was later declared dead until the family received another call from the hospital stating otherwise.

Another similar goof-up happened in Rajasthan, where Omkar Lal Gadulia’s family was informed about his death by the RK hospital. The 40-year old man was a liquor addict and was admitted to the hospital for liver treatment. However, without informing his family, Gadulia left for Udaipur.

His family was given the wrong “unidentified” body, which was somewhat identical to the addict. It wasn’t until May 23rd when Gadulia returned to his home when the startled family and authorities came to know about the actual story.
